Anaesthetic Options

Dr Chellappah is able to provide treatment under the following anaesthetic options:

Local anaesthetic

If the surgery is fairly simple, Dr Chellappah may give you local anaesthetic with a needle and perform the procedure in the consulting rooms. The local anaesthetic will numb the surrounding areas temporarily. This will allow Dr Chellappah to perform your procedure without any further pain and discomfort.

The local anaesthetic generally wears off after 1-2 hours. Dr Chellappah will prescribe appropriate pain relief for you.

Local anaesthetic with intravenous sedation

Some patients may benefit from a sedative drug administered into a vein prior to local anaesthesia to help relieve anxiety and pain.  Sedation is given by a specialist Anaesthetist. This allows treatment to be easily performed in the consulting rooms rather than in the operating theatre.

For six hours before surgery under local anaesthetic with intravenous sedation, do not eat or drink anything.

You will require a family member or friend to bring you to your appointment and take you home afterwards. You cannot drive for 24 hours.

General anaesthetic

For some people, Dr Chellappah may recommend a general anaesthetic, where you are asleep for the duration of the procedure.  The procedure is performed either in a hospital or day surgery facility. General anaesthetic is given by a specialist Anaesthetist.

Dr Chellappah performs procedures under general anaesthetic at:

  • The Northern Beaches Hospital

  • Pittwater Day Surgery

For six hours before surgery under general anaesthetic, do not eat or drink anything. If your surgery is scheduled for the morning, do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before. Dr Chellappah will give you full instructions.

You will require a family member or friend to bring you to your appointment and take you home afterwards. You cannot drive for 24 hours.
